Pull Focus Documentary Festival to feature Wonderful Losers: A Different World

Date Posted: August 1, 2018

Northern Ireland Screen supported documentary Wonderful Losers: A Different World will have its Northern Ireland premiere as part of the Belfast Film Festival’s Pull Focus documentary festival on Sunday 12th August.

Director Arunas Matelis spent four years following a series of ‘gregarios’ – the workhorse cyclists who toil for their team, and their team leader.

Rarely in the spotlight, they sacrifice everything for the greater good, and accept it’s unlikely they will ever win a stage or a major race. In focusing on the efforts of those that go generally unrewarded, this is a film that restores faith in the unforgiving world of professional cycling.

Partly filmed in Northern Ireland, with support from Northern Ireland Screen, Wonderful Losers has picked up awards at major film festivals across Europe, including best documentary at the Warsaw Film Festival.

Film director Arunas Matelis said: “We are so happy to finally return to Northern Ireland to show our completed film, as we began our film odyssey in Belfast, when the Giro d’Italia was here in 2014. It was through the generous support of Northern Ireland Screen, and the work of our Irish co-producers, Dearcán Media in Derry, and Planet Korda films in Dublin, that we began the long process of capturing these fearless cycling warriors.  It was that footage and the experience we gained that allowed our project to grow to become a major European co-production, and eventually to become an international success. Please come and join us at the screening on August 12th.”
