Irish Language Broadcast Fund studio series, An Focal Scoir, is back for a new series

Date Posted: May 6, 2021

An Focal Scoir, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund studio based discussion series, returns on Monday 10th May at 10pm on BBC Two Northern Ireland. The four-part series is produced for BBC Gaeilge by Below The Radar TV.

Over the four weeks, An Focal Scoir will discuss and analyse topics and events that matter to communities at a local and global level during these unprecedented times.

Máire Bhreathnach is joined each week by a panel of journalists and social commentators including Ciarán Dunbar, Áine Ní Bhreisleáin, Eimear McGovern, Dónall Mac Ruairí, Gormfhlaith Ní Thuairisg, Lisa Nic an Bhreithimh, Póilín Ní Chiaráin and Gearóid Ó Muilleoir.

In the first episode the panel discussion will address the legacy of maltreatment inflicted on young mothers within mother and baby homes in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The conversation will tease out the societal failure that permeated throughout life for decades on the island of Ireland. Location reports include an interview with survivor Marie Arbuckle whose baby was taken from her without consent from one of these institutions.

Other topics to be discussed during the series include the impact of Transfer Tests, how influential social media Influencers are, and the topic referred to as either “revenge porn” or “image-based sexual abuse”. This unlawful deed targets millions of people around the world and causes immeasurable harm. During the series An Focal Scoir will discuss the devastating and long-term impact that image sharing can have on victims and their families.

Antaine Ó Donnaile, Series Producer said: “We are delighted to have been able to make this high- quality studio-based series about current issues of critical importance to us all.  It is a compelling series with the highest production values that will engage people of all ages and backgrounds.”

Beidh An Focal Scoir, sraith díospóireachta stiúideo le maoiniú ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann ar ais ar BBC 2 TÉ Dé Luain, 10 Bealtaine ar 10 i.n. Ba é Below The Radar TV a léirigh an tsraith ceithre chlár do BBC Gaeilge.

Sa tsraith úr seo de chuid An Focal Scoir déanfar plé agus anailís ar thopaicí agus eachtraí a théann i bhfeidhm ar phobail ar bhonn idirnáisiúnta agus logánta.

I gcuideachta Mháire Bhreathnach gach seachtain beidh painéal iriseoirí agus tráchtairí sóisialta, lena n-áirítear Ciarán Dunbar, Áine Ní Bhreisleáin, Eimear McGovern, Dónall Mac Ruairí, Gormfhlaith Ní Thuairisg, Lisa Nic an Bhreithimh, Póilín Ní Chiaráin agus Gearóid Ó Muilleoir.

Sa chéad eagrán den tsraith An Focal Scoir díreofar ar oidhreacht na drochíde a bhí le fulaingt ag máithreacha óga sna hIonaid Máithreacha agus Leanaí in Éirinn, thuaidh agus theas. Pléifear an teip sochaíoch a leathnaigh amach tríd an sochaí leis na cianta ar an oiléan seo. Beidh agallamh againn i dtuairisc réamhthaifeadta ó mharthanóir amháin, Marie Arbuckle, ar tógadh a leanbh uaithi gan cead i gceann de na hinstitiúidí seo.

Beidh an Téist Aistrithe i measc na dtopaicí eile a bheas faoi chaibidil le linn na sraithe agus déanfar plé ar rath tionchairí ar na meáin shóisialta.  Déanfar scagadh fosta ar an topaic atá aitheanta go forleathan mar “pornagrafaíocht díoltais” nó “mí-úsáid íomhanna collaí”. Téann an gníomh neamhdhleathach i bhfeidhm ar na milliúin ar fud na cruinne. Déanfar plé ar an dochar dothomhaiste, fad-téarmach a dhéanann scaipeadh íomhanna collaí gan cead ar íospartaigh agus a dteaghlaigh.

Dúirt Antaine Ó Donnaile, léiritheoir na sraithe: “Tá muid iontach sásta a bheith ábalta an tsraith stiúideo seo a dhéanamh ar cheisteanna reatha atá ríthábhabhtach dúinn uilig.  Is sraith mhealltach í a bhfuil ard-luachanna léirithe ag baint léi agus a gcuirfidh daoine as gach aoisghrúpa agus ó gach cúlra spéis inti.”
