Afro-Mic Productions releases two brand new Ulster-Scots digital series

Date Posted: August 16, 2022

Afro-Mic Productions has launched two brand new Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund multimedia projects – Hoo Weel Da Yea Know and Tell Me Where You’re Frae Withoot Telling Me Where You’re Frae. Both series can be viewed on TikTokInstagramFacebook and Twitter.

Many Ulster-Scots words and phrases are used within its communities that the wider population in Northern Ireland might not know. The fun, punchy short form series, Hoo Weel Da Yea Know, goes out on location to put the public to the ultimate Ulster-Scots test, challenging them to track down an item or complete an action based on an Ulster-Scots phrase and/or word. All of the contenders interpret each test in wildly different ways – even if they know the meaning of the word – with some unexpected and hilarious results.

In Tell Me Where You’re Frae Withoot Telling Me Where You’re Frae, poets and performers from all over Northern Ireland celebrate the Ulster-Scots language and showcase their local surroundings. Each poet and/or performance writes and acts out a unique piece of spoken word poetry that encapsulates a favourite place or hidden gem in the area they’re from. By the final sequence, they will reveal to the viewer the place they call home. A different location is featured in each short episode taking viewers anywhere from Cullybackey right across to the Ards Peninsula. Each spoken word will not only celebrate Ulster-Scots language, but will touch on heritage, culture, authenticity, tradition and contemporary life.

Stacey Dickie, Assistant Producer at Afro-Mic Productions said: “At Afro-Mic Productions we wanted to create Ulster-Scots digital content that presented the Ulster-Scots language in a new and exciting way.

“Hoo Weel Da Yea Know sees us travel up and down the province, putting the public to the test in a bid to find out just how much Ulster-Scots they actually know. We wanted to combine language with humour to showcase a host of Ulster-Scots words and phrases.

“Taking aspects of the well-loved social media trend, Tell Me Where You’re Frae Withoot Telling Me Where You’re Frae sees a mix of talented poets, performers and everyday people recite poems and spoken word monologues, where they reveal their most loved and cherished Ulster-Scots locations. It was important for us and the performers to reflect an authentic and real life lived experience of what their Ulster-Scots life and heritage means to them.”

Heidi McAlpin, Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund Executive at Northern Ireland Screen said: “Both of Afro-Mic Productions new projects are a fantastic way to reach new audiences and present the Ulster-Scots language in an innovative and entertaining way. How Weel Da Yae Know tests unwitting locals on their knowledge of common and quirky Ulster-Scots words and phrases. And, inspired by a well-known TikTok challenge, Tell Me Where You’re Frae Withoot Telling Me Where You’re Frae sees poets revealing their favourite Ulster-Scots places in this delightful series of short films. We look forward to both digital projects being enjoyed and shared by everyone familiar with – and new to – our Ulster-Scots language and locations.”

Hoo Weel Da Yea Know and Tell Me Where You’re Frae Withoot Telling Me Where You’re Frae can be viewed on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
