The Call of the Pipes, Saturday 17 September, BBC Two Northern Ireland, 10pm

Date Posted: September 12, 2016

The bagpipes may be the national instrument of Scotland, but during the past 50 years Ulster has become the bedrock of the pipe band world.

The Call of The Pipes is an observational documentary funded by the Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund, which follows two bands as they prepare to take part in the biggest event of the year – The 2016 Belfast Tattoo.

Thiepval Memorial Pipe Band from Convoy in County Donegal is led by a fearsome female pipe major with a serious passion for the music.

McDonald Memorial Pipe Band from Dromore in County Down is a band with family traditions to uphold.

To be successful, both sets of musicians must live and breathe the band. This documentary explores that dedication and passion.

We see the tension mount as the big day approaches, and the hours of preparation that go into each performance.

Watch the documentary this Saturday 17th September at 10pm on BBC Two Northern Ireland.
