Step up to Shooting AP training programme

Date Posted: February 10, 2022

Are you looking to make the step up to fully fledged shooting AP? DV Talent, with support from the ScreenSkills Unscripted TV Skills Fund, is accepting applications for its Shoot AP Training Programme.

This brand-new highly practical, extensive training programme is aimed at researchers, APs and others working in unscripted TV, who want to shoot for broadcast, cross shoot and generally be an asset in the field.

Taught by acclaimed, self-shooting producer/directors and series producers this comprehensive course will teach delegates everything there is to know to shoot with confidence for a wide range of factual TV.

The programme will cover setting up and using popular broadcast cameras (such as FS5, FX9, FS7 or C300), building sequences and shooting for the edit, making the right lens choices, framing and shot composition, as well as lighting and sound to interview techniques.

The course will also teach the people skills needed to work effectively with contributors and with teams, as well as key compliance, logistical and health and safety considerations. Plus, plenty of tips, tricks, and insights.

In addition, delegates will get access to exclusive online masterclasses covering everything from career planning and development as an AP to managing your mental and physical health.

To apply, candidates need to:

  • have at least 2-3 years professional industry experience
  • have experience at researcher-level or up
  • demonstrate a commitment to becoming a shooting AP
  • experience using cameras is a bonus but not essential.

“Gaining valuable camera skills both technically and editorially is a huge challenge for researchers and APs who are ready to make the step up to shooting AP’’ said Matt Born, Programme Director. “Generally, that experience is gained sparingly ‘on the job’. With some of the best self-shooters in the business who are loaded with tips, tricks and anecdotes, we’ve designed a comprehensive course that will leave our delegates feeling confident and competent when it comes to all aspects of shooting for broadcast’.’

Sarah Joyce, ScreenSkills’ Head of Unscripted and Children’s Television, said “We are very pleased to be working with DV Talent to deliver training for people looking to take the step up to shooting AP. By arming a UK-wide cohort with an array of new job-specific skills, we hope to ensure that production companies across the UK have the talented shooting Aps they need to continue to make great unscripted content.”

Applicants based in Northern Ireland must be available 7-8 January, 21-22 January and 4-5 February 2023 to attend.

DV Talent is particularly keen to recruit delegates from the nations and regions, and underrepresented groups, including lower socio-economic backgrounds to ensure we are representative of all.
