Screen Academies release upcoming opportunities to work on short sci-fi film

Screen Academies have released new dates for their workshops across production design, film construction and VFX. Each academy provides the opportunity to work on a short sci-fi film Human Error.

Screen Academies is supported by the Department of Communities through Northern Ireland Screen and delivered by the three Creative Learning Centres in Belfast, Derry~Londonderry and Armagh.

Screen Academies provide training, mentorship and exposure to the film, TV, animation, games and vfx industry for young people aged 16-19 who are not currently at or enrolled in University. Local industry professionals share their expert knowledge and lead the hands-on industry standard training.

Production Design: Props Academy

As part of the crew you will develop the skills needed to work in the props department on a film set and have the opportunity to learn how to use the latest digital fabrication equipment at the Nerve Centre.

The Production Design Academy for Props is a unique training programme focusing on the key craft and design skills involved in the art department of film and television production. You will be introduced specifically to the key role of Props Master and be able to work alongside the other academies in production design, costume design, hair and make-up and learn how these diverse job roles are performed on a production.

Production Design: Costume Academy

You will have the opportunity to learn about costume design in film and how the costume department operates on a film production. Costume Designer Enda Kenny (Pirates of the Caribbean, Krypton) will be leading you through the process of developing costumes for the production of a short sci-fi film.

The Production Design Academy is a unique training programme focusing on the key craft and design skills involved in the art department of film and television production. You will be introduced specifically to the key role of customer designer and be able to work alongside the other academies in production design, props, hair and make-up and learn how these diverse job roles are performed on a production.

Production Design: Make-up Academy 

This Academy programme will give you the opportunity to work with award winning Make-up Artist Connie McGrath to create the prosthetics and make-up look for the characters.

Film Construction Academy

The Construction Academy is a unique training programme focusing on the key craft and design skills involved in the construction department of film and television production.

You will be introduced to the construction department learning the roles involved in building a set and will work alongside the Director of Photography to build a set incorporating the camera and lighting set up needed for this short sci-fi film.

Visual Effects (VFX) Academy

The VFX Academy is a unique training programme focusing on the key craft and design skills involved in the VFX department of film and television production. This academy will be led by the talented VFX Compositor, Rachel Hynds. You will gain experience and understanding on software such as Nuke, Blender, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects. You will cover topics such as greenscreen compositing, CG Modelling and shooting for VFX.
