Creative Europe development funding opportunities

Creative Europe UK Desk is open for two development funding opportunities; Development Single Project and TV Programming.

The UK can fully participate in Creative Europe until it leaves the EU and the during the implementation period agreed by the UK and the EU (until the end of 2020).

Development: Single Project

The Development: Single Project is open with a deadline of 12th May 2020 at 4pm for Northern Ireland based companies.

What does the funding support?

European independent production companies looking to develop a project with international potential for cinema, television or digital platforms.

Who is this funding for?

Applicant companies must:

  • Be established in one of the countries participating in the MEDIA sub-programme and be majority owned by nationals from those countries
  • Be registered for a minimum of 12 months and have audiovisual production as their main business activity
  • Be independent – no more than 25% of the share capital can be held by a single broadcaster (50% when several broadcasters are involved)
  • Own the majority of the rights to the project for which support is being sought
  • Be able to demonstrate an eligible track record project (see additional question for requirements).

What projects are eligible for development?

Projects intended for theatrical release:

  • Feature films, animations and creative documentaries (minimum length of 60 minutes)

Projects intended for television (one-off or series) or digital platforms (total user experience):

  • Drama (minimum length 90 minutes)
  • Animation (minimum length 24 minutes)
  • Creative documentaries (minimum length 50 minutes)

These minimums do not apply to non-linear digital platform projects.

The first day of principal photography of the submitted project must not be scheduled to occur within 8 months from the date of application.

TV Programming

The TV Programming fund is open with a deadline of 14th May 2020 at 4pm for Northern Ireland based companies.

What does the funding support?

The production and distribution of European television programmes with the potential to circulate within the European Union and beyond.

Who is this funding for?

Applicant companies must:

  • Be established in one of the countries participating in the MEDIA sub-programme and be majority owned by nationals from those countries
  • Be independent – no more than 25% of the share capital can be held by a single broadcaster (50% when several broadcasters are involved)
  • Have audiovisual production as their main business activity
  • Own the majority of the rights to the project.

What projects are eligible for development?

Programmes must be intended primarily for the purposes of television exploitation on both linear and non-linear services, and comply with the following minimum durations:

  • Drama (one-off or series) – minimum 90 minutes
  • Animation (one-off or series) – minimum 24 minutes
  • Creative documentaries (one-off or series) – minimum 50 minutes

For drama series only, sequels or second or third seasons are eligible. Fourth and further seasons of an existing drama series are not eligible.

The programme must be majority produced by companies established in countries participating in the MEDIA sub-programme and with a significant number of cast and crew who are nationals and/or residents of those countries (see item 6.2 of the specific guidelines for an explanation of how this is calculated).

The exploitation rights licensed to the broadcaster have to revert to the producer after a maximum period of 7 years for a pre-sale or 10 years for a co-production.
