Job Description
A costume trainee is responsible for assisting the costume designer as well as other members of the team to ensure the smooth running of the costume department.

Depending on the scale of the production, a costume trainee’s responsibilities might include assisting with research, sourcing, shopping and returns, basic alterations, laundry and organising costumes and costume supplies. A costume trainee may be required to assist during casting and support artist fittings as well as assisting members of the costume team on set during filming.

Where is it based?
The scheme will be based in various locations across Northern Ireland and participants will be expected to base themselves in Northern Ireland for the duration of the scheme.

Who is eligible to apply?
You are eligible to apply if you can answer these four questions:​​​​​

  3. Are you over 18 and not in full-time education?
  4. Are you available to participate in the scheme from April 2024 – March 2026?

NEW ENTRAINT TRAINING 2024

Northern Ireland Screen will run a training course aimed at new entrants seeking positions within scripted production, craft or technical departments.  For example AD, Locations, Sound, Camera, Electrical, Costume etc.

The course is open to anyone wishing to get their foot through the door in the film and TV industry and to get a better understanding of how a professional film or TV set works.

There are 36 spaces available, and each candidate will be required to attend 3 full days Monday 29th January – Wednesday 31st January, and a half day workshop on either Thursday 1st February or Friday 2nd February. You must be available to attend all four dates. 

Each day will cover key elements so that on completion of the training, candidates will be ’set-ready’ and more confident to apply for future trainee opportunities on Northern Ireland Screen’s Production, Craft and Technical scheme.

* Candidates that have successfully completed this round of New Entrant Training who apply for trainee roles within Northern Ireland Screen’s production, craft and technical scheme with be prioritised for shortlisting*

Delivery of the training will be a mixture of online and in person sessions.  In person sessions will take place at a venue in Belfast.  It is not possible to attend the whole course virtually.

The course includes the following;

  • Set etiquette including a who’s who of departments and responsibilities with Darren Fee
  • BECTU Creative Industries Health & Safety Passport (certificate valid for 3 years)
  • Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (certificate valid for 3 years)
  • Thrive in TV/ Resilience workshop with Bec Milligan

There is no charge to attend this course.

How To Apply

There is no requirement for previous industry experience, however, all applicants must be 18 years or over and NOT in full time education.  You must also be resident in Northern Ireland.**

**For the avoidance of doubt, Northern Ireland needs to be your primary residence for tax purposes. This scheme is not suitable for aspiring Writers, Producers or Directors.

Northern Ireland Screen is running a skills development scheme called Production, Craft and Technical Skills. The scheme provides training opportunities in the film and television industry between June 2022 – May 2024.

Production, Craft and Technical Skills  is a paid placement scheme (Real Living Wage) and the participants will gain experience on Northern Ireland Screen funded film and television projects over a two year period.

Previous experience is not essential, however, a keen interest in the film and television industry is desirable, together with a willingness to learn, be self-motivated and the ability to work under pressure at times, is crucial.
