A Wider Literacy is the advocacy document produced by the Education Policy Working Group (EPWG) of Northern Ireland Screen in conjunction with the British Film Institute.
The group was originally convened in 2000 to investigate and recommend a strategic approach for the introduction of Moving Image Education in the formal and non-formal curriculum. A Wider Literacy is the culmination of this investigative work and describes our vision for Moving Image Education in Northern Ireland. It was officially launched at a ceremony on March 22, 2004 at W5, The Odyssey, Belfast, by Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, the Department of Culture, Arts & Leisure, Angela Smith MP. The keynote speaker at the event was Anthony Minghella, CBE, Chair of the British Film Institute. More >>
The EPWG consists of representatives from the education sector - education and library boards, the council for the curriculum, examinations and assessment (CCEA), teachers, - and broadcasters, cinema exhibitors and other relevant government bodies. The Education and Training Inspectorate (ETI) were involved as observers in the group. A full list of member organizations and links is available here
The work of the Group focused mainly on aspects relating to the primary and post-primary sectors, but has implications for non-formal and continuing provision. It is planned to reconvene the group following the launch of the document to oversee and manage the implementation of A Wider Literacy across the education sector in Northern Ireland.
