Moving Image Arts (MIA) is a new qualification in the art of the moving image being introduced to schools across Northern Ireland by CCEA (the Council for the Curriculum and Examinations). Following the successful introduction of the pilot at AS-Level in the 03/04 and 04/05 academic years, the new A2-Level syllabus is being taught from September 2005.
Moving Image Arts was developed by the British Film Institute and CCEA in collaboration with the Nerve Centre and Northern Ireland Screen. Teacher training and ongoing support is being provided by the Nerve Centre and CCEA. The new qualification is located within the arts curriculum and has a clear focus on the visual arts and its relationship with film. The qualification is enabling art students to develop their creative abilities through actual 'hands-on' digital film-making in the classroom. MIA requires two practical digital film coursework pieces to be be submitted by each student.
A unique aspect of MIA is the examination format. In June 2004 students sat the very first live online exam in Northern Ireland at this level. Over 70% of students obtained a grade 'C' or better.
13 schools took part in the 04/05 AS-Level pilot. The qualification is being offered at A2-Level from September 05. It is anticpated that over 20 schools will participate.
Information on MIA is available by contacting Marion Miller, Principal Officer for Art at CCEA by email - info@ccea.org.uk.
CCEA and the Nerve Centre will organise a presentation for any Education and Library Board that wishes to encourage its schools to offer the new qualification.
