Northern Ireland Screen has an important remit to broaden access to, and develop awareness and understanding of moving image culture and heritage in Northern Ireland. As such, we have a crucial role to play in both the formal and non-formal education sectors in relation to Moving Image Education. It is our stated Educational Policy goal to:
“Embed the use of moving image and the creative use of related digital technologies in the curriculum in Northern Ireland.”
We will achieve our educational policy goals by working in partnership with key stakeholders in both the national arena, and here in Northern Ireland with organizations such as the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA), the Education & Library Boards (ELBs), screen exhibitors, broadcasters, independent providers, and relevant government departments. The establishment of our Education Policy Working Group (EPWG) was a direct result of our educational policy aims.
The EPWG, convened jointly by Northern Ireland Screen and the British Film Institute (bfi), has met regularly since 2000. Its main focus has been the development of an advocacy document entitled, A Wider Literacy – The Case for Moving Image Education in Northern Ireland. The document details our vision for the inclusion of Moving Image Education as a core entitlement within the formal curriculum at primary and post-primary level education, and in the non-formal sector, through to higher education and life-long learning.
