The Santer Session on BBC Two NI

Date Posted: September 10, 2013

Music has played a big part in the popular Santer television series. Musicians and singers from all over the world have appeared on the series along with local and Scottish performers. We now bring them all together for one mighty session. The Santer Session is on BBC Two Northern Ireland, Wednesday 11th September at 7pm.

From Scotland the programme features piper supreme Fred Morrison and singer Emily Smith. They are joined by Cape Breton fiddlers the Beaton sisters, Lauren Rioux from Maine in the USA, local singer, Diana Culbertson and Dunloy Accordion Band.

Add to this the pipers from the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe band and the Broken String Bluegrass band accompanied by the Santer house band, and there is one first class recipe for a successful session!

Karl Walker, producer at Blackthorn Productions said: “The tunes originated in Scotland and in Ulster but the question was, would it all work when we put the various styles together?

However, from the moment we tried the first tune with everyone present, we just knew it was going to be something we could all be proud of.”

Filmed in the beautiful setting of the Carriage Rooms in Ballynahinch, in front of a live audience, The Santer Session reflects the best of Ulster-Scots music and culture.

The Santer series will also air weekly from Wednesday 18th September at 7:30pm on BBC Two Northern Ireland.

Both The Santer Session and the Santer series received funding from Northern Ireland Screen’s Ulster-Scots Broadcast Fund.
