Ar Mo Bhealach Féin Monday at 10pm on BBC Two NI

Date Posted: January 9, 2017

Viewers have another opportunity to watch the Irish Language Broadcast Fund series Ar Mo Bhealach Féin, which is being repeated on BBC Two Northern Ireland from 10pm tonight (Monday 9th January). The three-part series follows Seán Mac Labhraí as he retraces the steps of his literary hero, Seosamh Mac Grianna, through Wales using Mac Grianna’s book ‘Mo Bhealach Féin’ as his guide.

The Donegal novelist, Seosamh Mac Grianna is renowned and celebrated for creating a new literature for the Irish language in the 20th century.

On the 9 April 1934 Seosamh Mac Grianna set off on a 300 mile trek through Wales in the hope of rediscovering his creative muse in a sister Celtic Nation. This fascinating character made promises – not to sleep under a roof, nor ride in a car or train and not to back away from a fight. But could he keep those vows? And would his journey, if completed, have any impact on his writing?

Eighty years after Mac Grianna’s adventure, Seán Mac Labhraí takes the same path, through the valleys, villages and stunning Welsh landscape to discover personal insights into the complex character of Seosamh Mac Grianna. He asks why one of Ireland’s greatest Gaelic novelists undertook this arduous physical journey and what – if anything – he got from it.

Ar Mo Bhealach Féin was produced by Macha Media for BBC Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Ar Mo Bhealach Féin, oíche Luain ag 10i.n. ar BBC Two NI

Tá deis eile ann breathnú ar shraith de chuid an Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge, Ar Mo Bhealach Féin atá á chraoladh an athuair ar BBC Two Northern Ireland anocht ó 10i.n (Luan 9 Eanáir). Sa tsraith trí chlár seo leanann Seán Mac Labhraí a laoch liteartha tríd an Bhreatain Bheag, agus leabhar Sheosaimh Mhic Grianna ‘Mo Bhealach Féin’ mar threoir aige.

Tá clú agus cáil ar an úrscéalaí Chonallach, Seosamh Mac Grianna, as litríocht úrnua a chruthú don Ghaeilge san 20ú haois.

Ar an 9ú Aibreán 1934, chuir Seosamh Mac Grianna chun bóthair ar shiúlóid 300 míle tríd an Bhreatain Bheag agus é ag súil le tinte na cruthaíochta a athfhadú i gceann de na Náisiúin Cheilteacha eile. Duine neamhghnách a bhí ann, duine an-spéisiúil. Rinne sé roinnt gealltanas – gan chodladh faoi dhíon, gan a bheith ag taisteal i gcarr nó i dtraein agus gan troid a sheachaint. Ach an mbeadh sé ábalta na gealltanais seo a chomhlíonadh? Agus an mbeadh tionchar ar bith ag an aistear seo ar a chuid scríbhneoireachta – nó an éireodh leis é a chríochnú féin!

Ceithre scór bliain i ndiaidh eachtra Mhic Grianna, beidh Seán ar an bhealach chéanna, trí na gleannta, na sráidbhailte agus thírdhreach maorga na Breataine Bige, le teacht ar léargas pearsanta ar charachtar chasta Sheosaimh Mhic Grianna. Agus beidh sé ag iarraidh freagra a fháil ar an cheist, cad chuige ar thug duine de na húrscéalaithe is mó sa Ghaeilge air féin an turas maslach, tuirsiúil seo a dhéanamh agus cad é a ghnóthaigh sé as – má ghnóthaigh a dhath!

Is é Macha Media a léirigh ‘Ar Mo Bhealach Féin’ do BBC NI, le maoiniú ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileán Thuaisceart Éireann.
