Grand Scheme Media hosting Production Accountancy course

Date Posted: February 24, 2017

Grand Scheme Media will host a Production Accountancy course in Belfast on Saturday 4th March and Sunday 5th March 2017.

The course has been designed specifically to help meet a shortage of skilled Production Accountants in the Drama sector. It is set at introductory level and you do not need to be already working in television. It will also benefit TV professionals looking to step up into the role or who may be looking to move into this genre of production. (You will need to undertake basic book-keeping training if you want a career as a Production Accountant but it is not essential for this course.)

Seamus Devine has been announced as the course leader for the two day event. The course has been created in collaboration with Creative Skillset and Big Talk Productions and you will get an insight into the following areas:

  • Basic Structures Of A Production. This will be of special interest to outside finance staff. It will explain how a production gets off the ground and explore the relationship between productions and the production company. It will cover the hierarchy of film crew and how productions time manage efficiently across the duration of a production.
  • Role of the Production Accountant. This will explain the relationship between the accountant and the production. For example, working to a Line Producer and to a Head of Production. It will examine how an accountant manages the flow of financial information from crew through to the company. We will look at the character required to succeed in the role: being approachable, tenacious and efficient.
  • Understanding The Budget. Looking at the essential tools for managing the accounts and how to work with a Line Producer. The course will explain Movie Magic and how it is converted into a Cost Report.
  • Basic Insight into Book-Keeping on High End Dramas.

Applicants will meet key industry experts and guest speakers. Grand Scheme Media will, where possible, make introductions to production companies and will also explore mentoring opportunities in collaboration with Creative Skillset.

Grand Scheme Media has established a reputation for delivering low cost and inspirational training in a range of TV skills. The company is lead by two former commissioning editors and executive producers with practical experience of working on a very wide range of successful productions.

Sharon Martin, who has helped design the course, has been Big Talk’s Finance Director since 2008. She has seen the company growing five-fold in this period. She has also overseen the sale of Big Talk to ITV Studios in 2013. Prior to her time at Big Talk, she was International Finance Director for Ogilvy & Mather and Grey Advertising under the WPP Group of companies.

Big Talk Productions is one of Britain’s most successful producers of Television and Film. Their programmes include FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER (now in it’s 5th series), COLD FEET, MUM, HOUDINI & DOYLE, the BAFTA award winning REV and HIM & HER.

Film productions include MAN UP, HOT FUZZ, CUBAN FURY, SHAUN OF THE DEAD and Edgar Wright’s new film BABY DRIVER, out later this year.
