Short Steps Back in Time update
Following the call for scripts earlier this year, three writers have been chosen to progress in Northern Ireland Screen’s Short Steps Back in Time scheme. Lisa Keogh, Christine Savage and Aislinn Clarke are now developing their individual 30 minute dramas which will come together to form one feature length portmanteau film.
Lisa’s project is Orla and Michael and the End of the World. After watching a disaster film, Orla asks Michael what he’d do if the world was ending – Michael says he’d go home to his family. Orla would rather spend the apocalypse with him, which makes Michael uncomfortable. The drama deals with Michael and Orla’s relationship and their attainable desires at the end of the world.
Christine’s Seabird looks to a future of change and evolution, as a mother struggles to prepare her pregnant daughter for a new reality, only to discover that the young woman has already more understanding and insight than she ever imagined.
Aislinn’s piece (title tbc) is also about the end of the world. She intends to take the theme quite literally and write a post-apocalyptic tale covering themes of: loneliness, desire, and the strength and determination of the human spirit to survive in an emotional and psychological (as well as a physical) sense in a strange and lonely new world.
A writers’ room has been formed and Vanessa Haynes is facilitating development sessions. A producer who previously took part in Short Steps and has a track record in film or television drama production will produce the 3 projects. Directors will be selected by an open call in March/April 2013.
