Cairde i gCéin (Faraway Friends) tonight at 10pm on BBC Two NI

Diarmaid Ua Bruadair from West Belfast spends each summer building houses with other volunteers in an impoverished community in northern Brazil. What makes Diarmaid Ua Bruadair even more unusual is that every year he is accompanied on the trip by his native Brazilian wife, Alvina, and their three young daughters all under the age of 11, and all of whom speak Irish.

In new Irish Language Broadcast Fund series Cairde i gCéin, (Faraway Friends) we accompany this extraordinary family as they lock their own house up for the summer and head off to help build homes for a families in the town of Paranaíba.

Throughout the two part series we will learn what drives Diarmaid, Alvina and the other volunteers to continue their work each year and follow the group as they move in with their host families and set to work. We’ll learn of the many challenges they face and share the personal frustrations and emotions that they experience. The group are introduced to some of the local traditions such as the traditional Brazilian martial art Capoeira. The group also visits a massive waste dump where many local people work.

Producer, Céara Quinn, said, “Despite the difficulties and frustrations, when the official opening ceremonies for the new homes take place, each traveller understands that they have been on an important personal journey and that they have learned so much from the local people about family, friendship and about what is really important in life.”

Cairde i gCéin is a Triple Vision Production for BBC Northern Ireland, with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund.

Cairde i gCéin

Ó Ghaeltacht Bhéal Feirste go dtí an Bhrasaíl

Dé Luain, 13ú Feabhra, BBC 2 Thuaisceart Éireann 10i.n.

Caitheann Diarmaid Ua Bruadair, ó Iarthar Bhéal Feirste, gach uile shamhradh ag tógáil tithe le hoibrithe deonacha eile i bpobal neamhfhorbartha i dTuaisceart na Brasaíle. Is as an Bhrasaíl í bean chéile Dhiarmada ó dhúchas agus téann sí féin agus a dtriúr iníonacha - iad ar fad faoi 11 bhliain d’aois – ar an turas neamhghnáthach seo. Is Gaeilgeoirí líofa iad ar fad.

Sa tsraith faisnéise seo, ‘Cairde i gCéin’, beidh deis againn dul ar an turas leis an chlann seo ón uair a chuireann siad a dteach féin faoi ghlas don tsamhradh go dtí go n-imíonn siad leo chun cuidiú le teaghlaigh áitiúla tithe a thógáil i mbaile Paranaíba.

Le linn na sraithe, foghlaimeoidh muid cén fáth a dtugann Diarmaid, Alvina agus na hoibrithe deonacha eile faoin turas seo gach bliain. Leanfaidh muid an grúpa agus iad ag bogadh isteach leis na teaghlaigh áitiúla agus iad ag cur tús lena gcuid oibre. Tabharfaidh siad faoi dhúshláin éagsúla agus roinnfidh siad a bhfrustachas pearsanta linn.

Beidh deis ag an ghrúpa aithne a chur ar roinnt thraidisiún áitiúil chomh maith, mar shampla Capoeira, ealaín chomhraic na Braisíle. Tabharfaidh an grúpa cuairt ar láthair dumpála chomh maith ina mbíonn a lán de mhuintir na háite ag obair.

Dúirt an léiritheoir, Céara Quinn: “In aineoinn na ndeacrachtaí agus an fhrustachais go léir, nuair a bhí na searmanais oscailte do na tithe nua-thógtha ag tarlú, thuig gach duine a thaistil ann go raibh siad ar thuras tábhachtach pearsanta agus gur fhoglaim siad an oiread ó mhuintir na háite faoi chlann, chairdeas agus faoi na nithe atá tábhachtach sa saol.”

Is é ‘Triple Vision Productions’ a léirigh ‘Cairde i gCéin’ do BBC Thuaisceart Éireann, le tacaíocht ó Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge Scáileáin Thuaisceart Éireann.
