Tacsaí Dubh, Sunday at 9.30pm on TG4

New Irish Language Broadcast Fund documentary Tascaí Dubh airs this Sunday, 5th December, at 9.30pm on TG4. Join the West Belfast Taxi Association as it looks back on its 40 year history and discovers how the black taxi has become one of Europe’s most unlikely tourist attractions.

The West Belfast Taxi Association started in the early 1970’s in Belfast as a reaction to public transport being cut off in the west of the city following the outbreak of the Troubles. This forced local people to start up their own DIY transport system, first using station wagons and then London black cabs.

This new urban-style bus brought people, six at a time, to their respective areas for the same price as a bus did. There were no bus stops, to stop a taxi you just put your hand out anywhere along the road, to get out you tapped on the window. At its peak, there were 300 cabs on the road day-in day-out.

It was often said that no matter what was happening in west Belfast; bombs, riots, shootings, the black taxi would always make its destination, even if that meant taking to the side streets. Drivers and passengers alike bring the story of the WBTA to life, often with a sense of humour that’s as black as the cabs themselves.

Tacsaí Dubh recently caught the eye of international film festival selectors, and has just been screened at the much acclaimed Irishfilmfesta in Rome. Speaking fresh from his return, producer Damian McCann says; “Spending time filming with the taxi drivers and passengers was a great experience, and I am delighted that it worked out well. It’s great to think that an international audience is equally taken by the service which tells a very positive story arising from our troubled past.”

Tacsaí Dubh (Black Taxi) was produced by Tobar Productions and will be broadcast on TG4 on Sunday 5th December at 9.30pm and again on Saturday 11th December at 7.15pm.
TACSAÍ DUBH – TG4 DÉ DOMHNAIGH 5IÚ NOLLAIG AG 9.30.i.n.

Craolfar clár úr faisnéise  TACSAÍ DUBH, maoinithe ag an Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge, ar Dé Domhnaigh seo chugainn ag 9.30 i.n.  Dhá scóir bhliain atá ann ó bhunaíodh an córas iompar íocónach seo atá anois ina dhíol spéise is éagsúla san Eoraip.

Thosaigh Cumann Thacsaithe Iarthar Bhéal Feirste sna seachtóidí mar thoradh ar ghearradh an iompar poiblí in iarthar na cathrach, de thairbhe briseadh amach na dTrioblóidí.  Bhí ar phobal na háite a gcóras féin a aimsiú, ag baint úsáid as carranna fada ar dtús báire agus ansin na tacsaithe dubha ó Londain.  D’iompair an bus uirbeach seo daoine, seisear ag aon am amháin, chuig áiteanna éagsúla ar an phraghas chéanna le bus. Ni raibh aon stad bus ann; le tacsaí a fhail ní raibh le déanamh ach do lámh a shíniú amach, agus le dul amach ní raibh le déanamh ach cnag ar an fhuinneog. Ag a mbuaic bhí 300 tacsaí ag dul suas agus síos an bóthar achan lá.

Dúradh go minic nach cuma cad é a bhí ar siúl in iarthar Bhéal Feirste – buamaí, círéibeacha, scaoileadh – bhíodh an tacsaí dubh in ann taistil i gcónaí, fiú ar na cúlsráideanna. Insíonn tiománaithe agus paisinéirí araon an scéal le greann agus giúmar atá chomh dubh leis na tacsaithe féin.

Ar na mallaibh tá an scannán feicthe ag roghnóirí idirnáisiúnta agus bhí sé á léiriú ag Irishfilmfesta, féile scannáin mór le rá sa Róimh. Ag labhairt i ndiaidh dó theacht ar ais, dúirt an léiritheoir Damian McCann: “Bhí sé ar dóigh ag caitheamh ama ag taifeadadh leis na tiománaithe agus na paisinéirí, agus bhí mé an-shásta leis an toradh.  Is iontach an rud é go bhfuil lucht féachana idirnáisiúnta chomh tógtha leis an tseirbhís atá mar cheann de na scéalta dearfacha le teacht as ré achrannach na dTrioblóidí”.

Is léiriú TACSAÍ DUBH de chuid Tobar Léiriúcháin Teo., le cabhair ón Chiste Craoltóireachta Gaeilge a bheidh le feiceáil ar TG4 Dé Domhnaigh ag 9.30 i.n. agus arís Dé Sathairn 11ú Nollaig ag 7.15 i.n.
